Community-Based Rehabilitation in Magubike, Morogoro, Tanzania
On December the 6th, 2019, six members of EMFERD's senior management team and two religious leaders with abundant experience conducting CBR seminars travelled to Magubike, Morogoro to deliver a one-day workshop to religious leaders and mothers of young children with disabilities. The goal was to educate the community on what the bible says about disability and how this should impact their treatment towards their community or congregation. As well as this, the workshop focused on informing the attendees on fundamental information related to disability and how to appropriately interact with, and empower, the people in their community who navigate life with a disability. Overall, our focus was on increasing inclusion and ensuring that no individual - regardless of ability - was being left out, excluded, or discriminated against. The day was an incredible success. About Lindsay’s Gift: Lindsay’s Gift is an American organization that seeks to increase the accessibility of religious experiences for individuals with disability - to ensure increased inclusion for people with special educational needs.

On July 26th, 2019 the founder of the Erick Memorial Foundation for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Disabled (EMFERD), Josephine Bakhita, went out into rural areas of Mvomero to work with four families EMFERD offers assistance to. During the day, Mama Bakhita provided clothing, biscuits, and support to the special needs children we aim to help and the families that love them. In part one of a two-part series, we meet two special families and Mama Bakhita explains how it is we help them, and what further help we would like to see them receive. Regular community outreach is just one part of what we do to help vulnerable individuals in the Morogoro region of Tanzania. To find out more about what we do, check out our website: emferd.org

Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is an informed strategy of rehabilitation focused on increasing access to resources for individuals with a disability and their family, and providing support to those who need it the most but get it the least. It is also an integral part of what we do at EMFERD. On August 10th, we held a one-day CBR workshop that aimed to help increase the understanding of our community workers and the tools they have at their disposal when working in the community. Across the day, we heard from two main speakers: Madeleine McMurray - who gave a talk on issues related to mental health and disability in Tanzania and globally; and Dietrich Chusi, who spent the remainder of the day offering practical help to our community workers related to working with different ages, disabilities, and needs.
