Our History
The Erick memorial foundation for education and rehabilitation for the disabled (EMFERD) was founded out of deep personal experience and conviction by mama Josephine Bakhita. On 17 February 1992 she launched a campaign advocating for the right and dignity of people with disabilities. This journey was inspired by the life of her son, the late Erick Samamkalami, who had multiple disabilities. Mama Josephine and Erick endured intense stigma and humiliation from both family and wider community. Erick’s condition, which was linked to a difficult matrimonial breakdown, was the spark that led Mama Josephine to champion the cause of persons with disabilities. Over past 32 years, Mama Josephine has established two organizations. The first was Amani centre for people with disabilities, where served for 18 years before gifting it to catholic diocese of Morogoro. Later, due to personal reasons she was unable to continue there and went on to found EMFERD in May 2011, officially registered under number 004606. With its headquarter in rural setting, EMFRED serves the families-particularly mothers struggling with the care and development of vulnerable children. Through this foundation, education, rehabilitation, and social inclusion are made possible for many who would otherwise be left behind.
